Velma Powell

This vocalist from Chicago is the epitome of the blues at its best. Her torrid and passionate voice contrasts with sultry sensitivity when singing jazz balads.

A blood relative of Brownie McGhee, she carries in her veins the sounds of her birthplace, the cradle of blues electrification, which he honors with every note that comes out of her throat. Velma has collaborated with the Vargas Blues Band, Red House, J. Teixi Band, Malik Yakub, José Luis Gutierrez, Coll y Costa and with the Spanish rapper, Chojín and many, many others.

The repertoire is based on her own compositions as well as classic sounds from the 40´s, 50´s and 60´s, primarily with the Chicago blues style with a touch of Mississippi Delta, where her mother was born.
She is backed by the a consolidated and prestigious band, Bluedays, who themselves have four albums currently available on the market. Bluedays accompanies Velma with a solid rhythm and harmonic base that is always tight and highly effective. Velma and Bluedays have participated in festivals all around the country and abroad.
